In Room 3 at Waituna West this week we have been making a Puriri Tree.  

First we made the bark for the tree.












Second step was to join Room 2 at our school to make lots and lots and lots of leaves and some Puriri pink flower. 

Can you see our leaves drying on the steps.  Aren't they such a sparkly bright green. 

Our teacher stapled the leaves and flowers to the tree.  We have over 120 leaves on this tree.

Our tree looks amazing - doesn't it?  Can you spot the creatures from the story Pepetuna on and around our tree?

Matai Hub-Inquiry and Puriri Moth Writing

This term, we are learning about how plants and animals are connected. With a buddy, we have been watching clips about the pūriri moth and monarch butterfly and finding facts about them after reading Pepetuna.

We have used words or pictures to collect our ideas.

We have compared them to find out how they are different and the same using words or pictures.

We have also been writing about the life cycle of the pūrir moth, using some of the great words and sentences from Pepetuna.

Hard to believe this is a real moth isn't it?

Ramarama School's giant puriri tree!

At Ramarama School we are very lucky to have a giant puriri tree on our school grounds! 

Our school is turning 150 this year and we believe it has been here from very early on in our school's history (the black and white image was taken in 1954...can you spot it next to the courts?)

It towers over the school and is filled with all sorts of creatures...including Pepetuna! We went out to have a closer look after reading the story and found an old burrow with a distinct diamond shape. (photo not of our tree)

We have been doing some writing about the book Pepetuna. Here are a few examples of our year 2 and year 1 children.

Our Bush Walk by Room 3 Waituna West School

On Friday we went for a walk in our school's native planting area. We were wanting to know if we had a Puriri tree in our school.  We took photos of a Puriri leaf to see if we could find one.  When we thought we'd found one, we collected leaves and we brought them back to the classroom to identify. Unfortunately we didn't have a Puriri leaf or tree at our school.  

But Room 3 would like to know if you have a Puriri tree at your school? We would love to see a photo of it if you do.
